Free public intergenerational dance performance of “Marigolds Downriver” by the
Spiral Dance Collective explores how one individual action impacts another. You can
join in this Earth Day event by attending the Community Dance Workshop @
Augusta’s Waterfront Park @ 9am, or be at your local town’s clean up activity to see the
dance as it moves down the Kennebec River Rail Trail from Augusta(estimated
time 10 – 10:30) to Hallowell’s Granite City Park (ETA @ 1030am-11am) to Gardiner
(ETA @ 11:30 – 12)!
● The Spiral Dance Collective. An intergenerational group offers itself as a vehicle for
choreographic exploration. Dancers learn site specific choreography.
● Choreographers share studio time. Dancer/choroegraphers:
○ Christine Little, founder, dancer, choreographer; Hallowell
○ Barbara Oesterlin – Heath; Whitefield
○ Dalziel Lewis; China
○ Jenny McKendry; Hallowell
○ Judith Zink; Skowhegan
○ Kay Mann; Hallowell
○ Kristy Ferran McNaughton; Sidney
○ Shae O’Connor; Hallowell
○ Sophi Reiter; Hallowell
● We are currently working on choreography titled “Marigolds Downriver”, that explores
how one action impacts another, how what happens upriver has an effect downriver, how
each individual action creates a ripple effect of impact in their sphere and out, and out,
and out.
● The dance involves three individual sections, each performed at a different location
along the Kennebec River Rail Trail, so that when the first dance is complete, the next
begins, and then the next, so that the dance literally moves down the river! We are
planning the first dance to be located at the head of the trail at the Augusta Waterfront
Park, the 2nd at Granite City Park in Hallowell, and the 3rd at the trail’s end in Gardiner.
● I will offer a community workshop prior to the performance in Augusta, where community
members are invited to participate and create a dance phrase that they will weave into
the set choreography that happens along the river, thus incorporating the community into
the dance. This is where you come in!!
● We will be dancing on the morning of this year’s Earth Day, Saturday, April 22nd, 9:30 –
12:30.
